Two Distinct Assessments

Appearance Anxiety & BDD Features

The AAQ measures two separate things: the level of appearance anxiety (which treatment may address) and the presence of BDD features (which indicate treatment is unlikely to help).

1

Appearance Anxiety Level

Measures the intensity of appearance-related concerns across 7 clinical domains. Higher scores indicate greater distress but do not necessarily contraindicate treatment.

High anxiety without BDD features may indicate treatment could help.

2

BDD Feature Assessment

Screens for specific features of body dysmorphic disorder using 5 ALERT items. These patterns indicate treatment is unlikely to resolve underlying concerns.

BDD features drive the GREEN/AMBER/RED triage recommendation.

BDD Feature Triage

Based on the presence of BDD indicators, not overall anxiety level

Standard Pathway

Lower appearance anxiety levels. Standard consultation with routine informed consent process.

Extended Discussion

Elevated appearance anxiety that may respond positively to treatment. Extended consultation to explore expectations and ensure goals are realistic.

BDD Features Present

Features suggestive of body dysmorphic disorder. Research indicates treatment is unlikely to resolve these concerns. Psychological evaluation recommended.
